RALI - Marine Paints NZ: Volvo Ocean Race comes to Auckland

Recently the NZ marine industry and all keen yacht enthusiasts were buzzing with the arrival of the Volvo Ocean Race Auckland stopover for the first time in 10 years.

The Volvo Ocean Race is one of the most demanding and challenging ocean races where teams compete on a nine-leg race traversing all of the major oceans of the world, cross the equator four times and round the world's two most iconic Capes - Cape Horn and the Cape of Good Hope.

The New Zealand entrant CAMPER is made up of an international team driven by passion, and working meticulously with a will to always find the best techniques and a strong desire to challenge the pre-established techniques. Cookson Boats, based in Auckland specialize in the construction of custom hi-tech racing yachts, was part of this team. Their skilled team of boat builders worked alongside Marcelino Botín and the CAMPER shore team to build the boat to the highest standards possible. Southern Spars, also in Auckland are world leaders in carbon spar design and engineering also became part of this team. Overseeing this build was Neil Cox, who has been involved in some of the racing industries biggest or most well-known projects.

Central to the CAMPER build has been the highly regarded and world recognized Durepox Primer manufactured by Resene Automotive and Light Industrial. Durepox is used extensively on both the inside and outside surfaces.

RALI and Durepox have a longstanding relationship with Team New Zealand. From the very first NZL boat Durepox has been specified for the Americas Cup Challenges, and been part of the build specifications. As each race aims to step up the challenge, as engineers and designers search for ways to increase speed and decrease drag, Durepox has kept pace.

In 2006 ETNZ took NZL84 to Valencia and went on to completely dominate pre regatta competition. ETNZ returned to New Zealand victorious to continue development and build a new boat, NZL94.

Both NZL84 and NZL92 are male moulded boats and a lot of preparation is needed to get the hulls into first class condition without sacrificing weight. Durepox was again used for all colours on both NZL84 and NZL92 as it was with many other Americas Cup syndicates.

Neil Cox used Durepox on CAMPER for the Volvo Ocean Race, and was very happy saying "the boat looks fantastic and we are more than happy with the finish! It is the most talked about boat here! We owe RALI a massive thank you for all their help so far with our Volvo Ocean project and I hope we can repay this by pushing Durepox right the way around the world for you."

This year's race saw 5 of the 6 Volvo boats coated in Durepox, cementing our supremacy at this competitive level. Our presence at the Auckland Stopover Exhibition Events Centre with Altex Carboline, our sister company, enabled us to further co-ordinate our efforts, promoting NZ boat building and the range of options that RALI and ALTEX can offer.

A full 10 days exhibition schedule, including workshops with boat designers, hosting delegates from all the countries, functions with Naval Architects Cocktail party, Team NZ BBQ, and the Super Yacht Dinner gave us great networking opportunities, and a chance to speak with designers, boat builders, skippers and the owners.

The patronage during the show was huge on the race days, some 365,000 visitors coming to enjoy the viaduct atmosphere; 54,000 visitors to the Event centre.
