DuPont Refinish back the Hulme

DuPont Refinish is distributing a specially made poster to its bodyshops throughout Europe and Australasia to promote the Hulme Supercar and the DuPont Refinish paint used on the magnificent vehicle.

The car, built by Hulme Supercars Limited in New Zealand, has a top speed in excess of 200 miles per hour. Named after the 1967 Formula One World Champion, Kiwi Denny Hulme, its curvaceous body, aerodynamic carbon-fibre chassis and orange and black two-tone DuPont Centari® 6000 and 3200S Chromaclear® clearcoat finish by Evans European Panel & Paint in Auckland, make the Hulme any car enthusiast's dream.

And thanks to the new poster's wide distribution around the globe, soon every bodyshop will have a Hulme gracing its walls.

Evans European was entrusted to paint the Hulme. Co-owned by ex-racing driver and holder of the New Zealand land speed record, Owen Evans, and Garth Chitty, Evans European has a large bodyshop employing 24 panel and paint technicians with an average throughput of 50 to 60 units a week. No measly figure, considering that it specialises in high-end marques such as Porsche, Aston Martin, Lamborghini, Bentley and Mercedes. With this impressive client list it was the obvious paint partner for Hulme Supercars creation.

During the design stage Garth was asked to look at the first concepts of the car. "I got involved with the planning and preparation," Garth explains. "We've been working with DuPont Refinish since 1997, so I called in the DuPont Refinish technical rep to work with me. After several tests we worked out a technical data sheet for the Hulme. Denny Hulme's racing livery was orange, which made it the obvious colour choice for the car. But, I wanted a special orange, not just a solid colour, so I tweaked the tint and added mica and effect pigments, but we decided to stay with a factory colour for the solid black. As soon as the colours were on the car came alive."

DuPont Refinish paints are supplied to the New Zealand market by Resene Automotive & Light Industrial, a subsidiary of Resene Paints. "We are the largest distributor of DuPont Refinish paints in the Australasian market," Resene general manager Chris Hill explains. "DuPont Refinish represents over 50 per cent of our business."

On the Hulme, Chris says: 'It is an awesome car. Its reception in New Zealand has been fantastic and everyone is very keen. I'm sure the DuPont Refinish poster will help spread that enthusiasm. Now, Jock Freemantle, the entrepreneur behind Hulme Supercars Limited, and his team just need financial underpinning to make the step to full production."

Kevin Docherty, DuPont Refinish brand manager Europe, Middle East and Africa says, "we are very excited to have been elected the paint of choice for the Hulme. We wish the New Zealand team behind the Hulme every success and we are happy to help the promotion of the Hulme by rolling out our specially designed poster to our bodyshops, who will, I'm sure, appreciate having such a beautiful car on their walls."
