Charity Bike Ride

Stewart Walker RALI Sales Representative in Timaru rode in the 'Central South Island Charity Bike Ride' from 20 to 22 February, in total a 365 kilometre route.

The idea to participate in the bike ride started back in late October of 2013. Stewart was having a conversation with Bob Merritt, Store Sales in Timaru about the registration coming up for the bike ride, and Bob asked him if he was doing it again to which he replied no., At this Bob made the fatal mistake of saying he should do it. There was nothing for it but registration and the purchase of a road bike.

Stewart started training; not being a cyclist apart from a couple of hours a week in summer on a mountain bike; this was quite a learning curve. The ride arrived soon enough and four months later we were departing for Kurow at 7:45 am on the 20th of February. Six hours riding and 129km later we arrived in Kurow where we enjoyed a great meal and a few ales with a great bunch of like-minded people. We departed Kurow at 7:45 am for Tekapo which was our second night's destination. We still had another 130km to ride and the weather was fantastic until we struck gale force head winds and it took two hours to do the last 20km. That night we had another great meal, a few drinks and we awoke to another fantastic day in the McKenzie Basin. North West winds were blowing but that was a tail wind for us, we departed to complete the last 105 km back to Timaru. We arrived back in Timaru about 3:00pm after six hours of riding, we were all feeling rather pleased with ourselves and rightly so.

The Charity ride is in its tenth year this year and has raised over 1 million dollars for charities in that time. The 180 riders raised $185,000 for the charities this year.  These charities are; Hospice, Riding for the Disabled, South Canterbury Heart Children, Family Works and Alzheimer's (SC). I would like to thank my many sponsors, but particularly Resene Automotive & Light Industrial (RALI) being my main sponsor. A bonus of the training was losing the equivalent of 2 x 4L of Durepox (grey) in weight, and I also now have a renewed motivation to put myself out there a bit more, as this has been a life changing experience for me. My daughters and my friends are quite proud of what I have achieved and so am I.
